I acquired the bike with the motor attached about 1-1/2 years ago. My wife took me to see her only surviving grandparent. A wonderful man, he is now 85 and confined to his bed. When I was there he took me on a tour, and in the shed was this bike frame with what looked like a mini-motorcycle motor attached. I had seen mopeds when I was just a boy, but never paid much attention to them. There was a bent handle bar, front fork with many very bad welds, all very rusty near by, no wheels or tires. He told me that he had used it to go to work for many years and had had an accident some years back and never bothered to fix it.
The header pipe was rusty and consisted of many pieces welded together, the muffler was rusty and dented. I was able to locate the fenders under some junk, he thought he had discarded them years ago and was surprised to see them again. The tank and other parts were in a cardboard box. My wife thought the bike would make a "antique" wall hanger, so he wanted to give it to her but I made sure he got a "gift" from me. It took me a week just to clean the dirt and oil off and out of the parts. Everything was a mess. I was just going to paint everything and just hang it, but I wondered if I could restore it to running condition. The mechanic I took it fixed 2-cycle motors so he said he could make it run, the problem was finding parts, he had to rewire the magneto, reweld the crank and replace the piston, he couldn't find rings for the original. We had to make a new head gasket and seals. The carb was ok after cleaning and new gaskets. Once it was running, I removed everything and painted, replaced, and re-plated to what I thought it should look like for the period. Harvey Golombic |
