Inspired by the Louisiana Bicycle Festival, the first
Midwest Bicycle Fest
was held in Haysville, Kansas a
suburb just outside of Wichita. This first time event held on October 2nd 2005 was kept simple to first "test the waters" to see how much interest their was locally in bicycles. Fliers, a website and word of mouth were enough to draw bicycle enthusiasts from around the state and the turnout was pretty good. Bikes and people of all ages, shapes and sizes attended. Classics, kustoms, home built choppers and unusual bikes graced the park grounds where the event was held. A trophy was given out for the "Peoples Choice" which was won by a restored 50's Western Flyer. Aside from viewing and talking bicycles, riding them seemed to be the most popular thing to
do. Whether it was an adult riding the Schwinn Krate they'd
always wanted as a kid, the young ones riding the choppers and kustoms or the brave trying to conquer a tall or swing bike, a fun time was had by all.
